Day of Caring

Our Day of Caring, takes place annually each spring. This is a parish-wide activity in which volunteers work on projects at or for several of these and other organizations. We also regularly supply groups to work on Habitat for Humanity builds and to serve as overnight shelter volunteers at Samaritan Ministries.
Our involvement with each of these organizations began when a parishioner saw a need and volunteered. There are many other worthy organizations in the community, all of which are looking for individuals who will do the same thing.
In the past, we have sorted food at Second Harvest Food Bank; assembled goodie bags and stuffed mailers at Crisis Control Ministries; did yard work at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Bethesda Center and Prodigals Community; baked cookies for the Hospice Home; made Mother's Day cards for the inmates and their children to give to the women in their lives for Jail and Prison Ministries; washed windows at Senior Services' Williams Adult Day Center; assembled 100+ care packages for our military personnel serving in Iraq; assembled brochures for Hospice; sorted donated items at the Habitat ReStore; and painted the front porch at the Battered Women's Shelter.
Our annual Day of Caring has become one of the parish's favorite events and is a fabulous example of giving, sharing and caring for your fellowman. If you have participated in the past, thank you so much for volunteering your time and talents, donating items for and mailing the care packages for our military personnel, and most of all for coming together as a parish family to do God's work for those in need. If you have not participated in the past, please consider joining us at the next Day of Caring. You will be so glad you did! Plus, first time volunteers get a free St. Timothy's t-shirt!

REPORT OF THE 2010 DAY OF CARING HELD APRIL 10

The 7th Annual Day of Caring held on Saturday, April 10 was a picture perfect spring day that began with a fabulous breakfast prepared by 4 members of our Men’s Group.  Thank you Skip, Robbie, John and Jim…it was especially delicious this year!  After breakfast, 75 volunteers worked on 7 projects for various agencies in our community including Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, New Borns In Need, Jail and Prison Ministries, Habitat ReStore, Battered Women’s Shelter and Crisis Control.  Our international outreach project was once again Operation Shoebox, one of the favorites of Day of Caring.  Volunteers assembled 68 shoeboxes full of goodies for our troops overseas, and Tony and Sandra Hamby delivered the boxes to a station in Charlotte Monday, April 12 where the boxes will be shipped overseas.  Thank you Tony and Sandra for offering your time and gas to do that!  And thank you St. Timothy’s members for the generous donations of items for the shoeboxes.  The troops will love getting something from home!  We had a little unplanned excitement in that the volunteers who went to Second Harvest Food Bank were not able to work there due to an apparent threat of a gas leak, so they were quickly redeployed to other projects.  A special thank you to those folks for being so flexible!  The day was full of sewing machines humming, creative juices flowing making beautiful cards, lots of elbow grease planting plants and organizing donated items, as well as a fair amount of sorting, collating and/or assembling supplies.  My heartfelt thanks to all the people who helped arrange, organize, lead or in some way helped out with the day’s events.  A big THANK YOU to the volunteers for your participation in Day of Caring 2010 and for making a difference in so many peoples lives!
